Hyundai is expanding its electric vehicle (EV) lineup with a new adventure-focused variant of its Inster electric SUV, called the "Inster Cross." This new model, while sharing the same platform as the regular Inster, is designed to appeal to a more adventurous audience with its rugged features, enhanced styling, and off-road capabilities. Set to enter production in 2025, the Inster Cross e-SUV will be manufactured at Hyundai's facility in Korea and will be marketed across Europe, the Middle East, and the Asia-Pacific region, with possible entry into the Indian market.
The Inster Cross stands out from the standard Inster model with several design and functional updates that cater to off-road driving and adventure enthusiasts. While the Inster Cross shares the same mechanical configuration as its sibling, it gains new aesthetic and protective elements to better suit outdoor and rugged terrains.
One of the most noticeable differences is the larger bumpers, providing added underbody protection that makes it more capable of handling rough terrain. The SUV also features black cladding around the body for a tougher look, and 17-inch alloy wheels to improve off-road performance. Additional features like a roof rack further enhance the adventure-ready nature of the vehicle, making it more suitable for carrying extra gear and equipment on road trips or camping excursions.
Despite its focus on ruggedness, the Inster Cross retains its compact dimensions. It measures 3,825 mm in length, 1,610 mm in width, and 1,575 mm in height, maintaining a small, agile stance that can easily navigate both city streets and off-road paths. This balance of compactness and capability is expected to attract buyers who need an SUV that can handle diverse environments.
The Inster Cross will be available in the same color palette as the standard Inster model, including Atlas White, Unbleached Ivory, Aero Silver Matte, Abyss Black Pearl, and Tomboy Khaki. However, it also comes with an exclusive Amazonas Green Matte option, adding a unique, nature-inspired hue to emphasize its outdoor-focused design. Some color options will also be available in a two-tone scheme with a contrasting black roof, further enhancing the rugged, sporty appearance of the vehicle.
Inside, the Inster Cross continues to differentiate itself from the regular Inster model with a distinct color scheme and practical design. The interior features a combination of grey and lime yellow, which is present on both the seating and dashboard. This bold color combination gives the interior a lively and modern feel, making it appealing to younger, adventure-seeking drivers.
The SUV is equipped with dual 10.25-inch screens—one for infotainment and the other for drive displays—offering a seamless digital experience for the driver. The multifunction steering wheel provides easy access to various controls, while the seating arrangement prioritizes comfort and flexibility. The front seats feature a bench design, and the second-row seats can either be folded flat or split 50:50 with a recline function. Additionally, the second-row seats can be slid forward or backward to optimize space and comfort for passengers.
Cargo space is also a highlight of the Inster Cross. The SUV offers a boot capacity ranging from 280 liters to 351 liters, depending on how the rear seats are configured. This provides adequate room for storing luggage, camping gear, or sports equipment, making the vehicle versatile for different types of adventures.
In terms of safety, the Inster Cross is well-equipped, offering a suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) similar to the standard Inster. These features include:
These features enhance both safety and convenience, ensuring that drivers and passengers are well-protected during their travels, whether on highways or rougher terrains.
The Hyundai Inster Cross will offer both standard and long-range electric powertrains, with two motor options. The lower-powered version will generate 95 horsepower, while the higher-powered variant will deliver 113 horsepower. Battery capacities will vary between 42 kWh and 49 kWh, providing different levels of range and performance.
The long-range variant, equipped with the 49 kWh battery, will offer an all-electric range (AER) of 359 kilometers (223 miles) according to the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP). This makes it suitable for longer trips without frequent recharging. Fast charging capabilities will allow the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes, thanks to 120 kWh DC charging support.
This flexibility in powertrain options allows buyers to choose a model that fits their driving needs, whether for everyday commuting, weekend getaways, or longer road trips. With the growing demand for EVs, the inclusion of both standard and long-range variants positions the Inster Cross as a versatile option in the electric SUV market.
Production of the Hyundai Inster Cross e-SUV is slated to begin in late 2025, with the vehicle being built at Hyundai’s manufacturing facility in Korea. Hyundai aims to target multiple markets, including Europe, the Middle East, and the Asia-Pacific region. The Inster Cross is expected to cater to a broad audience of adventure enthusiasts who are also environmentally conscious and looking for electric alternatives to traditional off-road vehicles.
For the Indian market, Hyundai is not only planning to introduce the Inster-based EV but is also preparing to expand its electric SUV lineup with other models, including the Creta EV and electric versions of the Venue and Grand i10. This move aligns with the broader trend of automakers increasing their electric offerings to meet growing demand and government regulations favoring eco-friendly vehicles.
The Hyundai Inster Cross e-SUV represents an exciting new direction for the brand, combining the benefits of electric power with off-road capabilities and rugged styling. By offering both standard and long-range powertrains, the Inster Cross will appeal to a diverse range of drivers, from urban commuters to weekend adventurers. Its comprehensive safety features, flexible interior, and attention to design details further enhance its appeal.
With production set to begin in 2025, the Inster Cross will join Hyundai's expanding portfolio of electric vehicles and is expected to make a significant impact in global markets. As the EV market continues to grow, the Inster Cross is poised to attract buyers seeking both sustainability and adventure in their vehicles.
