Move over Tesla and Apple (not that Apple ever really “moved in” with their phantom car project). Xiaomi, the smartphone company that seemingly decided, “Why stop at phones?” has just unveiled its next ambitious foray into the electric vehicle market: the YU7. It's big, it's bold, and it's basically screaming, “Who needs Elon?”

Think of the YU7 as the slightly taller, sportier sibling to the SU7 sedan, which, if you didn’t know, totally blew everyone’s minds earlier this year—Ford’s CEO literally had one flown to him like some sort of electric chariot. He loved it so much that he didn’t want to give it back, which feels like the electric car equivalent of “just one more bite.”
Scheduled to hit the streets in June or July 2025 (give or take some Xiaomi-style “fast and furious” production shenanigans), the YU7 promises to be China’s Tesla Model Y rival. In other words, it’s the SUV that’s here to make your Model Y look like last season’s iPhone.
We know the YU7 will sport the same design language as the SU7, which means sharp lines, sleek LED lighting, and a wraparound rear light bar that probably glows brighter than your ex’s neon sign obsession. It’s a big boy too:
Powering this electric mammoth is a dual-motor setup delivering a casual 681 hp. For perspective, that’s enough to dust most sports cars while silently judging them for their gas-guzzling ways.
Xiaomi hasn’t spilled all the beans yet, but rumor has it the YU7 will borrow battery options from its sedan sibling. Expect something in the neighborhood of a 101 kWh battery that could give it over 400 miles of range on the generous CLTC test cycle. Or, as we like to call it, the “you’ll need snacks for this road trip” battery.
If the spy shots are anything to go by, the YU7 is like if the SU7 hit the gym and decided it was done with squats but still wanted to turn heads. There are air slots behind the front wheels for aerodynamics, flush door handles for that “fancy spaceship” vibe, and enough LED lights to double as a rave venue.
Inside, we’re expecting Xiaomi’s usual minimalist wizardry:
The YU7 isn’t just another SUV—it’s Xiaomi’s way of flexing on everyone in the EV space. They’ve already proven they can build and deliver sleek cars faster than some companies can deliver pizza (looking at you, Apple). Case in point: Xiaomi churned out 10,000 SU7s in just 32 days and hit 100,000 units well ahead of schedule.
The YU7 is set to build on that momentum, entering a market that loves SUVs more than they love bubble tea. With a name like Xiaomi, a reputation for aggressive pricing, and a history of punching above its weight, this SUV could be the tech-turned-auto juggernaut we didn’t know we needed.
Will Xiaomi stick to China, or will they eventually bring their EVs to international markets? Given their insane pace of expansion, it feels less like “if” and more like “when.” So, Tesla, Ford, and, uh, Sony (hi, Afeela)—you might want to keep an eye on your rear-view mirror.
For now, Xiaomi’s YU7 is shaping up to be the electric SUV we’ll all be talking about in 2025. And honestly? We can’t wait to see how far this smartphone giant-turned-car maker can push the pedal.
