mg es5
The ZS EV, one of the first electric vehicles in India to offer a substantial driving range, has been pivotal in attracting more buyers to the electric mobility space. As MG's initial electric offering, the ZS EV has undergone one major facelift since its launch. Now, MG has unveiled its next-generation electric SUV, the 2025 ES5, with a bold new design and significant updates.
The new ES5 represents a shift in design and identity, marking a departure from its predecessor. While the outgoing ZS EV and the recently introduced Astor (ZS HEV) share many design elements, the ES5 differentiates itself with a completely unique appearance. Unlike the ZS EV, which largely mirrored the Astor's design with only minor changes, the ES5 appears to be an entirely new model, signifying a fresh approach for MG.
This divergence in design is reflected in the vehicle's name. While the current electric SUV is known as the ZS EV, the new model may adopt the ES5 nameplate, suggesting MG’s intention to position it as a standalone product. This also explains the significant design changes seen between the two models.
In terms of size, the new ES5 is slightly larger than the current ZS EV, measuring 4.48 meters in length and 1.85 meters in width, compared to the ZS Astor’s 4.43 meters and 1.81 meters. Visually, the ES5 adopts a sportier stance with a sleek, modern look. The front features a split headlight design, with triple LED daytime running lights (DRLs) at the top and the main headlamps positioned below. The closed-off grille reflects its electric nature, reducing the need for airflow compared to traditional combustion engines.
The ES5 also comes equipped with newly designed ORVMs (outside rearview mirrors) and updated alloy wheels, enhancing its overall aesthetic. At the rear, the ES5 features a sportier spoiler and connected rear LED taillights, a noticeable upgrade from the more understated design of the ZS.
While detailed specifications are yet to be revealed, it is anticipated that the ES5 will share its electric architecture with the MG 4 electric hatchback. This could mean an LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery pack of up to 77 kWh, offering an estimated range of 520 km on a single charge. The ES5 is expected to be available with a range of powertrain options, including motors with outputs of 168 bhp, 201 bhp, and possibly even 241 bhp.
More information about the ES5, including pricing and launch details, will be disclosed in the coming months.
