Tata Motors has officially unveiled the CNG variant of its popular mid-size SUV, the Nexon. So, how does it perform on the road? Join Drive Chronicle as we dive into our first drive review. Tata Motors continues to innovate, aiming to cater to a growing demand for eco-friendly vehicles. The Nexon, which previously featured a turbo-petrol engine, now offers a CNG option. Is it a thrilling drive and does it make sense as an everyday vehicle? Let’s explore.
The Nexon iCNG is powered by a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine, delivering 100 PS and 170 Nm of peak torque in CNG mode. While the torque remains the same, there is a reduction of 20 PS in output. This engine is paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox, with an automated manual transmission (AMT) potentially in the pipeline. Tata claims a commendable fuel efficiency of 24 km/kg in CNG mode.

There are many concerns and technological hurdles surrounding the integration of CNG with turbo-petrol engines, including fuel remapping and ECU adjustments. However, Tata Motors aims to redefine expectations with the Nexon iCNG. Thanks to a single ECU managing both petrol and CNG, the vehicle operates seamlessly in CNG mode. On the road, the Nexon iCNG delivers a linear power band, engaging drivers right from 1,800 rpm. Its mid-range torque is impressive, making quick maneuvers effortless.
While the three-cylinder engine may feel a bit shaky around 3,000 rpm, it does not hinder the overall experience.

The gearbox feels basic, prioritizing fuel economy over performance. Gear throws are relatively long, and shifts can be a bit notchy, but the clutch travel remains moderate. In terms of acceleration, the CNG variant is slightly slower than its petrol counterpart, but it is still a solid performer. One of the standout features of the Nexon is its ride quality; it confidently glides over speed bumps and manages most road imperfections with ease. The CNG variant is approximately 120 kilograms heavier than the petrol model, which contributes to its stable handling at higher speeds.
The steering wheel might feel oversized to some, but the Nexon CNG handles impressively. During our test drive of 145 kilometers, we achieved a remarkable fuel efficiency of 23.40 km/kg.
Tata Motors ensures that customers opting for the Nexon CNG don’t feel shortchanged. With eight trim options available, priced between ₹ 8.99 lakh and ₹ 14.59 lakh (ex-showroom), there's a variant for every budget. The top-spec Nexon CNG we tested is equipped with a panoramic sunroof, black leatherette seats, air purifier, wireless charger, a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, six airbags, stability program, tire pressure monitoring system, and a digital driver’s display, among other features. The CNG variant is priced at a premium of ₹ 1 lakh over its petrol equivalent.

Tata has cleverly designed the CNG variant with twin cylinders for refueling, freeing up usable boot space—an important consideration for customers. With a 321-litre cargo capacity, it can easily accommodate two full-size bags and a smaller one, which is only 60 litres less than the petrol variant. The only visible distinction on the tailgate is the i-CNG badge, setting it apart from the petrol and diesel models.
