>Royal Enfield Scram 440: A Worthy Successor to the Scram 411, Packed with Upgrades
Royal Enfield Scram 440
Royal Enfield, a name synonymous with legacy and innovation in the motorcycle world, has unveiled the Scram 440—a modern evolution of its popular Scram 411. Revealed at Motoverse 2024 in Goa, this scrambler is poised to replace its predecessor with significant upgrades, including a larger engine, better performance, and a suite of new features. The Scram 440 is set to launch in January 2025 and marks yet another milestone in Royal Enfield’s relentless pursuit of excellence.
The Scram 440 retains the rugged DNA of the Scram 411 but introduces subtle design tweaks and fresh features to keep things exciting. While the core design remains similar, the motorcycle now offers five striking new colorways—Force Blue, Force Grey, Force Teal, Trail Green, and Trail Blue—infusing a sense of modernity into the classic silhouette.
A significant visual upgrade comes in the form of a new LED headlamp, borrowed from Royal Enfield’s more premium lineup. This not only enhances visibility but also gives the bike a contemporary edge. For added functionality, the Scram 440 is now top-box ready, catering to adventure enthusiasts who demand practicality.
The new Force variant adds cast aluminium alloy wheels with tubeless tyres, a feature absent in the previous model, while the Trail version continues to sport spoked wheels for off-road aficionados. Riders can also choose from over 25 accessories, including crash guards, a headlight protector, and panniers, to personalize their Scram 440.
The Scram 440's frame has been strengthened for enhanced durability, making it even more capable for tough terrains. Ground clearance remains an impressive 200mm, and suspension travel is unchanged at 190mm up front and 180mm at the rear, ensuring smooth rides over rough trails and city potholes alike.
Braking performance sees a notable improvement with a larger front brake piston caliper (30/32mm) for enhanced stopping power. Additionally, the inclusion of switchable ABS addresses a key demand from riders, allowing for greater control and adaptability on varied surfaces.
Despite the upgrades, the Scram 440 maintains a manageable seat height of 795mm, making it accessible to a wide range of riders. The kerb weight has increased slightly to 196kg, but this is offset by the bike’s improved power and performance.
The heart of the Scram 440 is its 443cc engine, an evolution of the 411cc unit from the Scram 411. Achieved through a 3mm larger bore, the new engine delivers 25.4bhp at 6,250rpm and 34Nm of torque at 4,000rpm—a 4.5% and 6.5% increase, respectively. This added power is complemented by a new 6-speed gearbox, replacing the older 5-speed unit, and offering smoother performance and better cruising capabilities on highways.
Royal Enfield has also reworked the SOHC valvetrain system, resulting in reduced noise and a more refined riding experience. A lighter pull-type clutch further enhances ease of use, especially in stop-and-go traffic.
The engine is designed for versatility, delivering robust performance both on-road and off-road, while staying true to the Scram’s adventure-oriented ethos.
The Scram 440 seamlessly blends modern technology with Royal Enfield’s signature charm. The digi-analogue display remains unchanged, providing a mix of retro aesthetics and essential information. Riders can opt for the Tripper navigation pod as an additional feature for turn-by-turn directions.
The new LED headlamp is a standout addition, offering better illumination and a contemporary look. The switchgear remains traditional, steering clear of the rotary-style switches found on some other RE models, which maintains a familiar user experience.
Riders can now choose between tubeless tyres with alloy wheels (Force variant) or spoked wheels with block-pattern tyres (Trail variant), catering to different riding preferences.
The Scram 440 will be available in two distinct variants:
These options ensure that the Scram 440 appeals to both adventure seekers and urban explorers. The upgraded 6-speed gearbox and refined powertrain also make the bike more versatile, allowing for relaxed highway cruising without compromising on off-road capabilities.
While Royal Enfield hasn’t revealed the official pricing yet, the Scram 440 is expected to command a slight premium over the outgoing Scram 411, which is priced between ₹2.06 lakh and ₹2.12 lakh (ex-showroom). With the added features and performance upgrades, the new pricing is likely to be competitive within its segment.
Test rides for the Scram 440 will begin on December 15, 2024, and the motorcycle will officially hit showrooms in January 2025.
The Royal Enfield Scram 440 is more than just a replacement for the Scram 411—it’s a thoughtful evolution that addresses rider feedback while introducing meaningful upgrades. With a larger engine, enhanced braking, improved suspension, and modern features like switchable ABS and LED lighting, the Scram 440 is better equipped for the demands of today’s riders.
Whether you’re drawn to its off-road prowess or its urban versatility, the Scram 440 promises to deliver an unmatched riding experience. Royal Enfield’s ability to retain its classic charm while embracing modernity ensures that the Scram 440 will be a worthy addition to its legendary lineup.
Stay tuned as the Scram 440 begins its journey on the roads and trails in 2025. For fans of scramblers, the wait is almost over.
